Craft is the thing you do when no one is watching. It’s the detail in the corner of the screen that most users will never notice. The animation timing on a state transition. The way an empty state is worded. The precision of a shadow.
I’ve been thinking about what craft means now that AI tools are good at generating the surface of things. It’s a real question, not a defensive one. If the execution is getting easier, where does intentional skill live?
My answer is that craft moves up the stack. It becomes less about executing individual decisions and more about knowing which decisions matter, and why. The judgment about whether something is right doesn’t get automated. The feeling that a design isn’t finished even if you can’t yet say why. That’s where the skill is now.
At Framer we’ve always tried to build a product that rewards caring. Not just one that produces acceptable output, but one that makes it possible to go further, to notice the thing that’s slightly off and fix it. That’s what we mean when we say it’s a tool for designers.
The best work I’ve seen, in design, in writing, in music, has a quality you can feel even if you can’t explain it. It’s the result of someone refusing to stop before it was right. I don’t think anything changes that.
